Child Rape Documentary
Monday, July 06, 2009 - 1:37 AM
Dr. Ken Wilcox is currently working with Director Kim from South Korea and Rock Productions on a documentary about child rape in Cambodia and the psychological impact on the child as well on the the society of Cambodia in general.

The documentary will examine many aspects of motivations behind Child Rape, how the family system copes with it and even normalizes it in many ways, and to explore social and cultural issues surrounding this phenomena.  In this process it will look at previous trauma in this country and how the Khmer Rouge regime led to an increased level of violence within and accepted in this society, as well as the concept of identification with the aggressor and how this perpetuates this violent history in this current generation.

Child rape is way too common in Cambodia, as are all violent crimes.  I continue to work hard to bring the psychological consequences and limited treatment and resources to light in this country.  The family system has reinforced a lack of education, communication, and sharing of information, caught within a traditional society the is crashing with a modern day one.  Psychology is new in Cambodia and most victims do not talk to family, friends, a mental health worker, or even a medical doctor after being victimized.

The psychological impact is devastating.  With any hope, this work will help to expose these things to the world and the community, helping some of these children and adults who have suffered.

Child Rape
Keva,

Wanted to thank you for your comments and I will agree with you that it is a terrible thing in terms of what is happening to children here and across the world. I have been working with this community here and across the world and it is both interesting and devastating at the same time. This film has been censored by the government here which is saddening as it is an accurate description of the problems with child rape in this country. I am sorry for what you may have experienced in your own life and I hope that you have received the support that you need!

Again, thank you for sharing and please feel free to comment or call/email me personally.

release
Dear Emayli,

The move has been delayed for release because of governmental issues here in Cambodia. So the aim is to release in Seoul, Korea and allow it to do the film festivals and come back to Cambodia in DVD form. It was supposed to have been released in February, but has been set now for end of April! Stay posted and will let you know more!

Sad...
Its very sad when we look at what the world is coming to, to think that little girls are now targets, becoming mere objects, subjected to being raped, just because of their size and innocents I think it is easier for these monsters to control and manipulate some one who is looking security and love, while exploring the world. These guys and also females to some extent because these cases have evolved into some extreme cases. Should try to realize that what they do to a little child in this case a little girl plays a serious effect on the after math of their lives. And in any case should think of it in this way, if I had a daughter ,a sister , a mother , a grand mother, a aunt, a step (respectively) and she was raped an killed how would this make me feel, in this there are many things I can say about this topic which I am currently doing a portfolio on, but in thinking and speaking about these cases it sickness, troubles and hardens my heart. To think that a human could be so wicked, personal a rapist would not like to be with in 1feet of me or my family, in doing this portfolio, I have created a plan ,and I advise every female no matter the age as long as you can think clearly and are physically able to, should make a plan and show this rapist they just messed with the wrong female, on that particular day, as they normally do to females marking them for life I plead with females to do the same (sorry to say but this topic upsets me personally).

Title
The name of the documentary on child rape, abuse etc finally has its name, "Total Brokenness: Cambodian BAKSBAT". Referring to the broken spirit of the child who has suffered the abuse that they have. Child rape continue to be on the rise and the victims receive no psychological help, no legal help, but are shamed and tossed from society - usually to go on to being sex workers here. This must change. The film is a work of art by Director Kim and all those who have given so much to make it happen!

Child Rape Cambodia
The buzz around this movie continues to grow as it will be featured in the start of 2010 at the Seoul Film Festival as part of the 26 years honouring the awards and films of Director Kim. It has also gained awards buzz for most other festivals and potentially the 2011 Academy Awards (honouring 2010 films and documentaries). Although many films have been makde about the struggles and plight of Cambodia and its people, this movie steps into the human qualities of these young people who are being victimized and then shamed by their own society - outcasting them to lives in brothels and poverty. Many victims have told their stories and it is heartwrenching to hear them, but so powerful in how strong (even if just on the outside) that they have had to be. Victimised by their own familes, neighbours, and friends, and then tossed out as a "broken child".
