1st International Psychological Conference Cambodia
Friday, November 13, 2009 - 6:01 AM
So I am taking on a monster task and introducing a Psychological Conference to Phnom Penh, Cambodia.  The country, as a whole, has almost no psychological services or treatment besides rudimentary medication distribution and inexperiened and lowly educated counselors with nowhere to gain experience.  As one of the only Doctors of Psych I have taken on interns and supervisees to help train, but it is important to bring Psychology and its needs to the whole public and the world's attention.

We are planning the 1st International Conference for one year away, November 2010 and will be inviting some well known psychologists around the world to speak as well as local people working directly in the field or related to, or of course just wanting to learn more about psychology.  It will be open to professional in mental health, students, and just about anyone.

I am open to suggestions, ideas, thoughts, criticisms, or anything constructive to help pull this major task off.  If you have any interest in speaking or participating in anyway, please feel free to contact me and I would be happy to discuss.

There is a facebook page just going up which will be updated regularly (1st international psychological conference cambodia) and there will be a full link on my own website soon as well.

Time to put Psychology and Cambodia on the map and time for this country to get the help that it needs from our international professionals and local ones.

Thank you so much for your responses, but due to reasons on the ground here in Cambodia, we are going to have to delay the conference to another time and date. We are so sorry for those involved, all of which have already been informed and arrangements made regarding business aspects of it. We hope to bring this conference to light in Cambodia as soon as the environment is more willing and reciprocating.  Wish you all the best!

More info on the conferenc
Dear Dr Ken,
I am pleased to hear about the international conference on psychology in Cambodia. As per your ads, it will be starting in Nov 9-12, 2010. Now there are only 3 months to go. Therefore, I would like to know more information about the conference such as: venue, participants, registration (I don't see the registration from), speakers, topics etc.. of the conference yet.

There are a lot of Khmer mental health professionals in Cambodia, none of them aware of your conference. Please let me know if your plan is still in place?

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

1st International Psychological Conference Cambodia
We have gone ahead and booked the conference location at the Cambodiana Hotel -a majestic hotel on the Mekong River with adequate space and rooms to hold this grounbreaking conference. I have heard from people around the world expressing interest in speaking and workshops and I am convinced this will be a greatly successful adventure bringing attention to the much needed psychological care in Cambodia. The planned dates are November 9, 10, 11, and 12 (tues through fri), allowing for one to enjoy their weekend in Phnom Penh or visiting the Beautiful Angkor Wat tempes in Siem Reap. You can now register via paypal on this website (go to registration) or by bank transfer or moneybookers (please inquire at IPCC2010@hotmail.com). Conference
As we continue to make progress on this groundbreaking International Psychological Conference in Cambodia, we will soon have more information about the exact location, dates, etc. I am narrowing down the location in Phnom Penh that can handle the number of people that I am hoping will attend. We will also start to list some of the speakers that have already expressed great interest and their topics as well as provide information on how you can present at it as well. The focus will lean towards trauma in developing nations around all aspects from poverty, to war, to physical and emotional trauma, to family systems etc. But I am open to new and all ideas as they come in!

I am strongly encouraging international and Khmer psychology students to present as well. You are the future of this field and in a country that is changing rapidly, it is your ideas that lead to this future of mental health care here in Cambodia and all over the world. While we learn from established people in the field, the students provide us with the future. We will open daily seminars where students will be able to learn from each other and present brief presentations.

Lastly, once I have worked around budget restraints (as this currently being privately funded without sponsor), I will look to offer sponsorship to a number of students and professionals around the world to benefit from the event itself and to provide growth and educational experiences within Cambodia itself!

Thanks to everyone for their enthusiasm.

Hello Ken.

we spoke on the phone a few months back, i live and work in Kampong Cham and have a BA in Pschology. I am very interested in this conference and would like to be there for it. I know of a person who is Psychiatrist in Ohio who might be interested in it as well she has done some research and study in PTSD. I am very happy that you are doing this it is much needed. I also will try to find out the name and contact of a guy who was here a few years back that did an extensive survey on the Khmer relating to PTSD, he was here from the US services and Dartmouth. His research might be helpful.
